Two Types of People

By Carisa Rangel Gottuso

There are two types of people in the world: those who golf and those who don’t. And this is for both of you. Love INC’s 2nd Annual Golf Tournament is right around the corner! If you’re a golfer, keep reading. If not (yeah, me neither), you keep reading, too.

I’d like to start by telling you what this tournament is NOT about. It’s not about the golf. It’s not even about the money. We are playing golf and we do hope to raise a lot of money, but it’s all about the people. It’s always about the people.

Love INC’s Golf Tournament is about the young, single mother working hard to make ends meet. When her children have clean clothes and new shoes that fit, their fear of being embarrassed or teased or bullied at school goes away and they are free to focus on being kids; on studying hard and making friends at recess. Properly-outfitted children stay healthier and miss less school, making for a better education. Better yet, this young, single mother no longer has to hide her tears from her children. Instead, she gets to walk them proudly to their bus stop on the way to the first of her two jobs, knowing she’s given them her best and set them up for success. We can help her children if we have the funds.

Love INC’s Golf Tournament is about the couple living on the streets with no help, no resources, and not even enough money to even pay for a state ID card, which they need to apply for their next job. But guess what? This couple did find help through Love INC’s network of Church and Community Partners. In addition to an array of resources, they now have long-term friendships with people who listen without judgment and cheer them on each day as they become more and more stable. Thanks to Love INC, they now walk around town without experiencing a sideways glance when they walk into the store, without the avoidance of eye contact, and without the intentional move to the other side of the street. How much is the restoration of dignity and access to life-changing tools worth when you need to catch a break in order to begin again? We can help this couple if we have the funds.

More importantly, Love INC’s Golf Tournament is also about training a new generation on what it means to care for our fellow human beings, teaching them how to take care of each other, to give back, and to pay it forward. Our children, nieces, nephews, grandkids – whether they know it or not – need us to show them how to love others in tangible and practical ways, not only family and friends, but each and every person living in our community; especially the hurting, lonely, and disenfranchised who may not be able to reciprocate.

We can offer this if we have the funds. Love INC can offer this opportunity to show a new generation the joy, meaning, purpose, fulfillment, and transformational significance of selfless service to others–helping them decide by our example what kind of adults they will aspire to become.

I told you it wasn’t just about golf. I don’t golf. And, you don’t want to see me golf–ever! But, I believe so much in what everyone here at Love INC does that I’ll find people who do love to golf. I’ll find people who do have the heart to give. I’ll take the time to personally be involved.

Because it matters. The people we help matter. But, I can’t do it alone. Our volunteers can’t do it alone. We need you, our extended community, to stop what you’re doing and ask yourselves the question I hope has been percolating while you’re reading this. What can I do?

Well, I’m so glad you asked! First, the details (don’t worry, if you’re not a golfer there’s still plenty you can do!):

Our golf tournament is quickly becoming a major fundraiser that allows Love INC to meet more needs, serve more people, and make a bigger difference right here in North Marion County.

YOU can help. You CAN make a difference. Here’s how:

  • Do you love to golf? Plan to join us! Register by yourself or with a partner. Better yet, find three friends and register as a team. Register here.
  • Don’t like to golf? Tell a golfer (or a foursome) about this tournament and why it matters. Share this post with them and invite them personally. Offer to pay for (or split) their registration fee.
  • Do you own (or do you know) a business that would like to register as a sponsor for our tournament? Let people know you care about our community by partnering with us to promote your business. Do that here.
  • Don’t like to golf but like to eat (like me)? Come for the lunch! Meet up with someone who is golfing in the tournament or just come for the food and camaraderie and raffle. You can do that, too (right here).
  • Are you available on July 19th? Come down and volunteer. You can sign up by emailing us here.

One more thing: I’ve saved the most important request for last. And it’s for everyone. Will you help us by forwarding this to one person? Just one person. You can help us spread the word and make this event everything we know it can be, even if it’s not about the golf.
